In service of its mission to expand the audience for literature in America, the National Book Foundation annually awards the $10,000 Innovations in Reading prize to an individual or organization that has developed an innovative project that creates and sustains a lifelong love of reading in the community they serve.

In addition, the Foundation recognizes four honorable mentions. Both the winner and honorable mentions are invited to participate in the Foundation's annual Why Reading Matters Conference.
